The coordinating team and our Egyptian
visitors, Emil Zaki and Rafik Nagy, attended the third and final
advocacy workshop on Saturday, September 9, at Central Presbyterian
Church. Kari Carstens from Citizen’s for Community Improvement and
Bev Shroeder from Senator Tom Harkin’s office were the presenters
for the final workshop.
Carstens was the first presenter. She first explained the four
models for affecting social change: political or electoral, social
services, advocacy and organizing. She then explained the
difference between advocacy and organizing, i.e., speaking and
acting on behalf of others versus persons speaking and acting on
behalf of themselves.
Organizing, she explained requires breaking an issue into small
parts and being very specific. It also requires identifying who can
affect change and who are the decision makers. Finally, organizing
focuses anger into action by telling one’s own story.
Shroeder explained that advocacy requires educating yourself about
your elected officials. She said it is important to know on which
committees they serve, their voting records and to keep your issues on their radar screens. Congressional staffers, Shroeder
explained, are an important conduit to our legislators. It is vital,
she said, to do your homework prior to meeting with them. Becoming
the source of information about a particular issue and developing
anecdotes, which can put a “face” on an issue, are important tools
for advocacy

November/December 2005
December 10, 2005, Coordinating Team Meeting
·Present:
Margaret Magill, Elizabeth Smith, Nancy Lister Settle, Denise England, Paul
Walther, Lila Jean Johnson, Linda, Jim Mace, Dave Best, Linda Powell, Mary MacKenzie
·
Nancy opened the meeting with
devotions.
·
Nancy reported that more of
the Egyptian crafts are selling at the Alternative Store at Westminster.
Coordinating team members should get Nancy any crafts remaining crafts at
their churches.
·Nancy announced that the
Ecumenical Advocacy Days for Global Peace with Justice will be held March 10
- 13, 2006, in Washington DC. Nancy and Mary are interested in attending and
hope two additional people can join them.
·As the group prepared to
create the 2006 goals, they discussed a real need and desire for advocacy
training this year. Nancy reported that Together For Family Development members,
through several training workshops this past year, have become skilled
advocates. Several persons made suggestions of resource people and
organizations who might help us become more skilled advocates. Nancy also
reiterated the general JHAH philosophy of mission and what new members or
churches might expect when becoming involved with JHAH
·Following goal setting, the
remainder of the meeting time was spent sharing delegation pictures and
selecting those to be used in a Power Point presentation. Elizabeth Smith
and Mary MacKenzie will work together on the presentation.
November 19, 2005,
Coordinating Team Meeting
● Nancy opened the
meeting with a devotion.
● The delegation
reported that they had an excellent trip, learned much and felt very
welcome. They found the Network renewed and growing. The Network has
completed several workshops on advocacy training and working together. Their
focus issue this year is people with disabilities.
● Nancy will prepare the
annual report and budget request for the Presbyterian Hunger Program.
● The team discussed how
we will proceed for the coming year. Nancy suggested that instead of
focusing on a specific issue, we concentrate on learning how to
advocate. It was decided that the December 10 meeting will be a planning
meeting with the entire group participating. One of the items we will
discuss is how to spread the word about JHAH throughout the presbytery. It
was suggested that we get on the docket of the next presbytery meeting in
January, as a start, and consider meeting with the regional partnerships.
Another suggestion was to prepare a Power Point presentation that could be
shown at such meetings. To that end, each delegation member will bring 20-40
pictures to the next meeting so that a composite group of photos can be
selected.
● Nancy took our
remaining craft items to the alternative gift store at Westminster. They
were very glad to get them and have already sold several.
● The delegation shared
photos from their trip.
● The next regular
meeting is December 10, 10:00 a.m., at Dallas Center.
